| The books of the Bible were written originally either in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek. Hebrew is the original language of all the books of the Old Testament except Wisdom and 2 Machabees, which were written in Greek, and parts of I Esdras, Daniel and Jeremias, which were written in Aramaic. Greek is the original language of all the books of the New Testament except Matthew, which was originally written in Aramaic. Hebrew is a Semitic dialect spoken by Abraham and his descendants ate their migration into the land of Chanaan, and often called by Jewish rabbis a holy or a sacred language, replaced Hebrew after the Jews returned from their Babylonian captivity. It is the language spoken by Christ and His Apostles. The Greek of the Bible is not the classical Greek of Plato, but a common Greek that had become a universal language after the conquests of Alexander the Great. |
